New show devoted to motocross - Boston Herald.com

Quit spinning your wheels and get down in the mud with the most action-packed show dedicated to the sport of motocross anywhere — starting tonight and every Friday night at 6 p.m. on Boston Herald Radio.

To those not familiar with motocross, we race dirt bikes on tracks over natural terrain that include huge jumps launching riders more than 100 feet and four stories high. Although motocross is a niche sport (don’t say that to hard-core fans) and not for the faint of heart, it’s tremendously popular. In fact, major networks such as NBC Sports and Fox Sports cover racing live on a weekly basis.

Big name sponsors are also in the mix and they market their key athletes much like NASCAR. Energy drinks such as Red Bull, Monster and Rockstar all got their start in motocross from a marketing standpoint and they sponsor the biggest names and teams in the sport. Top riders do very well financially, signing multimillion dollar salaries in most cases before they are in their mid 20s.

The pro motocross championship just concluded this past weekend in Utah and the series is taking a break until January. But motocross fans around the world are marking their calendars and eagerly awaiting Sept. 21, when the Motocross Des Nations kicks off in St. Petersburg, Russia. It’s the Olympics of motocross, and you heard it here first — Team USA is a lock to win.

BHR’s decision to carry our show — which we call “Holeshot Radio” — is a big win as well for its listeners. “Holeshot” is one of the fastest-growing radio shows across the country. It grabs listeners who are hard-core fans of the sport as well the non-fan who loves competitive banter mixed in with a few shenanigans.

All three hosts have deeps roots in motocross — I’m a former racer and team owner, Doug Henry is a pro motocross legend and member of the Motorcycle Hall Of Fame and Dave Olcott is a race promoter.

I realize tossing around the word “legend” when talking sports in Boston is a bit lofty, but that’s how Doug Henry is regarded in motocross. He’s the Larry Bird of motocross and if there was a Mount Rushmore for our sport, he would certainly be on it. When I asked Doug what it’s like to be a legend as well as a member of the hall of fame he said, “I don’t think of myself as a legend or one of the best ever. I was just a kid from Connecticut that really loved to race motorcycles and I was able to earn a living doing it.”
