FLY Riders Deliver Down Under in Aussie SX Series

November 13, 2014 – Boise, ID – The 2015 Australian Supercross season has come to close and FLY Racing team riders delivered outstanding results in both the SX1 and SX2 classes. Penrite Honda Racing team rider Gavin Faith returned to defend his SX2 title and did just that, capitalizing on a second place finish at the final round to clinch the SX2 title for the second straight time.

In the SX1 class, NPS Monster Kawasaki rider Adam Monea put together and incredible season to finish out the year second in the SX1 title chase. "The result is a real credit to Adam. He showed a lot of skill and experience for somebody who hasn't raced SX for four years. We're very pleased to finish this series on the podium ….,” said NPS Monster Energy Kawasaki Race Team manager, Troy Carroll.

Congratulations and well wishes go out to Jay Marmont for an outstanding racing career. The eight-time Australian champion, and Penrite Honda Racing team rider, has confirmed his retirement from racing after finishing ninth place in the SX1 series. “That definitely wasn’t the way I wanted to bow out,” Marmont said. “It was an up and down night but that is just the way it goes. It is confirmed that I am retiring but I will not be leaving the sport all together.”

In honor of Veteran's Day, MX Sports Pro Racing and the National Promoter's Group (NPG) are proud to announce the continuation of an initiative with the Veteran Tickets Foundation, where active and retired military veterans will once again have the opportunity to attend any round of the 2015 Lucas Oil Pro Motocross Championship, sanctioned by AMA Pro Racing, at no cost.

For 2015, Lucas Oil Pro Motocross has donated 50 General Admission tickets for each of the 12 rounds of the Nationals to the Vet Tix foundation. Tickets will be available to all military veterans two weeks prior to each event through VetTix.org.

"The donation of free tickets has dramatically widened the range of ways that veterans can relax, enjoy themselves, share smiles with their families and loved ones, and for some, be re-integrated into civilian life," said CEO and Founder of Vet Tix Michael Focareto.

Major sports franchises from Major League Baseball, the National Basketball Association, National Football League, and National Hockey League have also partnered with Vet Tix, as have World Wrestling Entertainment and Professional Bull Riders. Lucas Oil Pro Motocross was one of the first prominent motorsports properties in the country to offer this one-of-a-kind service to all veterans of the armed services and is proud to enter its fourth year of partnership with the nonprofit organization.

Vet Tix, based in Phoenix, is a national nonprofit organization that provides free tickets to veterans and active-duty members of the military and their families. The concept of Vet Tix was developed in 2008 by U.S. Navy veteran Michael Focareto. Since then, the organization has given away more almost 1.2 million tickets to veterans nationwide.

All active and retired military veterans can create an account on VetTix.org to receive emails and reminders about when Lucas Oil Pro Motocross tickets become available. More information about Vet Tix can be found at VetTix.org.

The 2015 Lucas Oil Pro Motocross Championship kicks off Saturday, May 16, with the Hangtown Motocross Classic in Sacramento, California. Review 'Any Sunday' sequel rides in as energetic eye candy

Bruce Brown's 1971 Oscar-nominated documentary "On Any Sunday" celebrated motorcycle racers and enthusiasts (like Brown himself) in the immersive manner of his noteworthy surf movie, "The Endless Summer"

 

Now his son Dana (of "Step Into Liquid" fame), clearly intent on updating Dad's work, has directed and narrated "On Any Sunday: The Next Chapter," a high-energy sequel spotlighting two-wheel passion around the world, including motocross champs (James Stewart), daredevils (Robbie Maddison) and the international stars of the global MotoGP circuit (Marc Marquez).

The movie zips from place to race — the Bonneville Salt Flats, the Pikes Peak hill climb, a crazy off-road competition in Austria — with the attention span of someone over-juiced on Red Bull, whose logo is emblazoned everywhere because the company's media arm produced the movie. As lifestyle flicks go, it's energetic eye candy, with the Ultra HD slo-mo, slick aerial views and thumb-size cams putting a 21st century stamp on the original film's POV innovations.

But over-editing too often disrupts the flow of the more beautiful shots, and some engaging personalities, like deaf racer Ashley Fiolek, get short shrift in an effort to sell motorcycles as a community builder and even a tool for bringing healthcare to remote regions of Africa.

"Next Chapter" may not exhibit the scrappy charm that characterized the first film's glimpse into a marginalized but colorful world, but for devotees, Dana Brown has assembled a love letter to a now-global culture.

"On Any Sunday: The Next Chapter."

Rated PG for perilous action, crashes, brief language.

Honda Signs JM Bayle!

Honda has signed Jean-Michel Bayle as their HRC Sporting Manager. That position has not been defined, but he will play an advisory role in the new HRC Honda team of Gautier Paulin and Evgeny Bobryshev.

Jean-Michel Bayles said, “In motocross I was always a Honda rider. I was riding Honda when I got my two motocross World Championships. For me, in my heart, I always go to Honda.  I’m so happy to be back and to get involved with the team because it’s my passion and we have two good riders for next year, so I’m very happy to be in the team to go for the world championship.

“I think Honda is a big brand with a big reputation in racing especially, and I think Gautier Paulin and I know that when you are all together, a good rider and a good team, you are going for the World Championship. That’s what we are here for, for the challenge and to bring home the World Championship.

Gautier Paulin said, “To be a part of Honda again is just amazing. In two words, it’s a dream. I started my professional career with Honda and to be part of the HRC family is such a good feeling. We have been working really well together already and the feeling with the CRF450RW is really good – that’s what I signed for! I really feel good on the bike. It’s always a challenge changing teams, but I really like the crew around me.It’s just like coming home for me.

Team manager Roger Harvey said, “We’ve introduced Jean Michel Bayle as sporting manager, so he’ll be looking after the riders, looking after advice, and obviously his vast experience comes into play a lot. The riders have a lot of respect for him so he’ll be working with both of them throughout the year.”

2014 Lilliputian Hare Scrambles

Prairie City, Sacramento’s very own bad ground rock pile of an OHV park and home of the world class Hangtown motocross track. Over the years the Dirt Diggers who are the only motorcycle club to promote a national motocross event, have hauled in enough dirt, sand and rice hulls to transform this part of the park into a national caliber MX track.

A couple of times a year two clubs (Dirt Diggers and the Polka Dots) put on cross country events at the park. The fall event is called the Lilliputian (I don’t know why the Dirt Diggers picked this name) (It comes from the book Lilliput and refers to a Lilliputian as a very tiny person) A lot of people just call it the Lilliput.

Saturday and Sunday was the umpteenth annual for this event and the turnout was large. District 36 cross country events have gotten large enough that in order for everyone to have a full length race it takes two days. The district also has one of the largest youth programs in the country which bodes well for the future of our sport. Normally bad ground, rock pile, little vegetation means lots of dust, but overnight rain worked its magic and the turnout reflected that. 

District 36 runs a vintage bike class at all their cross country events and there were twenty riders on the starting line for this race alone. (There was a husband and wife riding in this race) In fact all the rows were full, my row had at least thirty riders. Although there were only three of us in my particular class, heading into the first corner with that many others always make for a tight sphincter muscle.

The course was around nine miles long. Although it appeared to be very fast over this rolling hills open area and even though there were sections where you could go as fast as your gearing or bravery would let you the lap times indicated it was overall much slower than it looked. Only a few of the top vintage A riders were able to get in five laps before the hour and a half race flag. Speaking of vintage bikes it’s amazing how fast these older technology bikes are. We all get caught up in the newest trickiest must be the best.  

 

I got a mid pack start and tippy toed my way around the first half dozen corners, while my main class competitor sliced and diced his way to the front as if he was a twenty something. He’s an old Pro flat tracker and rides aggressively and fearlessly off the starts.

Most all of the cross country events these days feature some sort of Enduro Cross section and I caught up to Fred in this rock pile section near the end of the first lap. We went through the scoring shute nose to tail. Fred passed me back a little ways into the second lap and kind of disappeared. I finally started to loosen up and caught back up part way through the third lap and passed him on a rocky (Imagine that) up hill (My four stroke working better in that area than his two stroke) and slowly rode away from him.  At the end of the fourth lap I had managed to pull out quite a minutes on him finishing first in our little three rider dual. 

Besides the great weather, great comradery, good traction followed by bad traction, rocks, mud, the ambulance didn’t move all day. And this was just Saturday, Sunday was another beautiful day and the racing was just as good.

MX Makes County Money!

Motocross industry brings revenue into Grady County

GRADY COUNTY, GA (WALB) - Some of the best young, up and coming motocross riders in the world come to south Georgia to train.

And a new study shows the economic impact they have on Grady County.

Motocross riders from across the globe start every day like this.

Training and racing at Millsaps Training Facility in Grady County.  

And while the noise bothers some neighbors, they may change their opposition to the industry now that research shows how much revenue motocross brings into the county. 

Grady County Chamber of Commerce Executive Director Chadd Mathis said, “We knew that they were impacting the local businesses.  We knew that there was an economic impact here.  We just didn't know to what extent.”

So Mathis applied for and received a grant from the Economic Development Research Program to gather more information about visitors' expenses as well as other business activity relating to motocross. 

Millsaps Training Facility Program Coordinator Paul Bevan-Thomas said, “We always thought it was a lot.  We didn't really realize it is as much as it is. $3.9 million a year.”

The study showed that the motocross industry brings in more than 50 jobs into the county and over $260,000 in state and local tax revenue. 

And the economic impact isn't the only thing these riders want to contribute to Grady County.

Riders from Millsaps have decided to step away from their bikes and volunteer for projects around the community.

Bevan-Thomas said, “Certainly, we train them to ride the dirt bike, but we want them to be well-rounded people who understand the community that they live in. And just be part of giving back.” 

And now Southwest Georgia Tech is collaborating with Cairo High School to create a new program that teaches students more about the technology behind the bikes.

Wienerschnitzel’s 'Visionary Department' launches campaigns to woo younger customers

Wienerschnitzel has announced its partnership with Joe Gibbs Racing, a North Carolina-based professional supercross and motocross team, as a sponsor and the "official hot dog."

According to a news release, the sponsorship agreement was spearheaded by J.R. Galardi, 25, son of Wienerschnitzel’s late founder, John Galardi, and CEO, Cindy Galardi Culpepper. The partnership is one of the first activations of Wienerschnitzel’s newly developed Visionary Department, which is focused entirely on "capturing tomorrow’s consumer."

"We are expanding and want to introduce our brand to a younger audience. Supercross and motocross is a perfect match for our strategic plans," J.R. Galardi said in the release. "This partnership is a great way to kick off big things to come for Wienerschnitzel."

As part of the sponsorship, Wienerschnitzel logos will be placed on bikes of pro-racers, Justin Barcia, No. 51 and Weston Peick, No. 40. The company-branded bikes will debut at the 2014 Monster Energy Cup Oct. 18 at Sam Boyd Stadium in Las Vegas.

A Day At The Beach!

Thousands turn out for Weymouth's beach

THOUSANDS turned out despite the cold weather and biting wind to watch nearly 300 motocross riders take to Weymouth beach today for this year's Beach Motocross. 

Organised by Weymouth and Portland Lions Club and Purbeck Motocross Club in association with Weymouth and Portland Borough Council, this year marks the event's 30th anniversary and is also the first year the event had been held across two days.

On Saturday crowds watched Squibb freestyle stunt team perform amazing jumps and enjoyed children's entertainer Gorillaman's quad-bike antics on the beach.

A practice session for motocross competitors took place on the beach at midday before Mayor Kate Wheller and Weymouth Carnival Queen Emma Whitbread officially started the races at 1pm.

First aiders were called in to help with minor injuries, and there were a few falls during the day, but nothing prevented riders from going all out to beat their competition and complete the race course.

Ruth Margetts, 78, from Sherborne, said: “I have been coming down to Weymouth at weekends for over 10 years and I watch the motocross every year. I always enjoy it, the weather’s been cold which has helped, but this year has been just as good as last year.

"We came down yesterday for a bit and saw the stunts, they were good. I’ve even brought my 85-year-old sister down because she has never seen it so I thought she’d like it. She’s enjoyed it too.”

Alf Stearn, President of Purbeck Motocross Club, said: “It’s been absolutely fantastic. There have been around 20,000 visitors just on Sunday, and another 10,000 who came to watch events on Saturday.

"All the riders want to win it and there’s lots of talk of people coming back next year. The weather held out and it was good in the end, it’s worked out well for the two day event.”

Mr Stearn added plans for the 2015 and 2016 events were already underway.
