The 2016 Legends and Heroes Supercross Moto Museum Tour heads back to sunny San Diego for round six of Monster Energy Supercross, an FIM World Championship. This Saturday night at Petco Park the Legends and Heroes tour will honor five-time United States Grand Prix winner Gerrit Wolsink.
Gerrit Wolsink (born 1947 in Hengelo, Gelderland) is a Dutch former professional Grand Prix motocross racer who competed in the world championships in the 1970s. He is best remembered for being a five-time winner of the 500cc U.S. Grand Prix of motocross at southern California’s famed Carlsbad Raceway, dominating the event for five straight years between 1974 and 1978. It was a surprising feat considering the Dutchman was considered a sand specialist.
A dentist by training, Wolsink chose a career in motorcycle racing. He began competing on the Grand Prix motocross circuit on a Maico motorcycle as a privateer. In 1974 he was offered a spot on the Suzuki factory racing team as Roger DeCoster’s teammate. He finished third in the 500cc world championship in 1975 and 1977 and second in 1976 and 1979.
Wolsink will be at the Legends and Heroes Moto Museum display this Saturday afternoon at the Monster Energy Party in the Pits in San Diego, California for a meet-and-greet with the fans. He will be presented the coveted Legends and Heroes Award by six-time AMA Champion Broc Glover on the Monster Energy Supercross podium during the Saturday evening program in Petco Park.
