Ferrandis Phoenix Racing Honda deal made official

To compete onboard CRF450R through entire 2024 SMX season.

The future of Dylan Ferrandis has been confirmed through the 2024 season, the Frenchman officially signing a deal with the Phoenix Racing Honda team next year onboard a CRF450R.

Ferrandis, 29, makes the switch after a long stint with Monster Energy Yamaha Star Racing, which saw him win the 2020 250MX championship, plus the 450MX title the following year on debut.

With Cooper Webb, Eli Tomac and Justin Cooper to feature in Star Racing’s 450 program next year, it became evident that Ferrandis would not continue. Despite early rumours that he would join HEP Suzuki, he was recently seen testing with Phoenix Racing and he will contest the entire 2024 SuperMotocross World Championship (SMX).

Part of former multi-time 250SX West champion Ferrandis’ deal with Phoenix Racing is the addition of Factory Connection, which will see Rick ‘Ziggy’ Zielfelder an integral part of the organisation after working with Ferrandis in the final stages of Pro Motocross this year.

“I’ve always wanted to race a Honda and Phoenix Racing has given me the opportunity to do so,” said Ferrandis. “David Eller has been super-nice with my situation and working towards building a program that will work for me. This includes working with Factory Connection, which is something that was very important for me in 2024.

“So far everything has been really great and the feeling on the bike is exactly what I was looking for. Having Ziggy around, with all his experience in the sport, I really feel at home with him and the whole Phoenix Racing team. The vibe is awesome and I’m very thankful to be in this situation”

The opening round of the 2024 Monster Energy Supercross Championship takes place at Angel Stadium, Anaheim, on 6 January, with Chase Sexton (Red Bull KTM Factory Racing) entering as the defending number one.

Future in the air as Musquin plans to sit out Supercross

Back on the bike 'for some fun' as 2024 season approaches.

Frenchman Marvin Musquin will sit out the 2024 Monster Energy Supercross Championship, his future up in the air after an injury-affected season that saw him injured in January.

Musquin has been a mainstay at Red Bull KTM since arriving in the United States over a decade ago in 2011, continuing on a Supercross-only deal these past two years.

However, that plan was derailed almost immediately after he broke his wrist between Anaheim 1 and San Diego, effectively ending his campaign just one round into the season. He hasn’t returned to competition and, now, has announced that he won’t be returning for 2024.

“Many of you are wondering what I’m up to and what my plans are for the next couple months,” the 33-year-old revealed. “What I know for sure is that I won’t be racing the 2024 US Supercross series.

“I have been taking some good time off to heal my last injury. It’s been fun to get back on the bike and I love riding – I will give you more news as soon as I can. In the meantime, I hope to see you at the track for some fun.”

Musquin has been one of the most high profile riders in the sport globally, winning two MX2 World Championships prior to establishing his career in the US. He won the 250SX East title in 2015 and achieved a string of top-three results in the 450SX and 450MX series between 2016-2019.

The 2022 season saw Musquin finish fourth in the final 450SX standings, picking up a single victory – the 10th of his premier class career – in St. Louis. It’s unclear if he will maintain an association with KTM into the new year.

Racing the World

Hunter & Jett Lawrence have achieved so many incredible feats in their young motocross careers, yet even they know how special the Motocross of Nations event is. Hear from the boys in our short film "Racing The World" where they break down what makes the MXoN event so unique and their own personal pride of being able to pull on the green & gold and represent Australia at the biggest motocross race of all. Though ultimately falling one place short of their overall goal and winning Australia the Chamberlain Trophy for the very first time, their 2nd place finish in France this year is undoubtedly a sign of things to come in the future for the Lawrence brothers and Team Australia. With both Hunter and Jett making the move to full-time 450 guys in 2024, it goes without saying that Team Australia will be a serious contender at the Des Nations events for many years to come.

I'll Be Back!

I'll be on the starting line at Anaheim 1

Following his Achilles tendon injury at the Denver Supercross back in May, there were questions about what the future would look like for Eli Tomac. The two-time 450SX Champion and four-time 450 Class AMA Motocross Champion continued to move up the records books both indoors and outdoors as he progresses into the later stages of his career. In fact, he was leading the race and 450SX Championship when he pulled off the track at Empower Field At Mile High. So what impact would the injury have on Tomac's career? Would the injury end his career there in Denver in front of his home crowd?

Well, just a few months later, ET3 signed another one-year deal with Monster Energy Yamaha Star Racing back at the end of July (later clarifying the deal is supercross-only with a motocross option). He has said previously his goal is to race until he is not competitive enough to fight for race wins and championships anymore. But again, at 30 years old he showed no signs of slowing down this year, earning a class-leading seven main event wins before his season-ending injury. He got back to riding October 2, which was big progress. Now we have another update on the Colorado native.

In an Instagram video posted on the @blucruofficial account, Tomac is seen riding supercross and then provides an update, stating the following in the video:

“It’s the beginning of November here, I just got back on the supercross track. I’ve been on it probably four days now and before that I spent probably three and half weeks on the motocross track just building my base up. Now we’re to the real deal, back on the supercross track. I’m feeling great. I still feel like I’m ahead of where I anticipated. I don’t feel like I’m going to behind at all anymore. So, I’ll be ready to go come Anaheim 1, 2024.”

There have been a lot of questions around New York Jets quarterback Aaron Rodgers in the Naitonal Football League (NFL) and while the two sports are different, it is interesting to watch the two progress through their respective recoveries, both being later in their respective careers. Rodgers at 39 years old—and turning 40 in December—has mentioned possibly making a comeback around mid-December. If Rodgers is able to come back and play this year, he would undoubtably be the first player ever to suffer a significant injury but return to play later in the same season, no matter the sport. While Tomac made no public intentions of returning to racing this year, he seems to still be progressing through his rehabilitation faster than he expected. Tomac turned 31 years old today and again, looks like he has more podiums, race wins, and possible championships still on the table.

Tomac will line up alongside Monster Energy Yamaha Star Racing teammates Cooper Webb (two-time 450SX Champion) and full-time 450SX rookie Justin Cooper for the 2024 Monster Energy AMA Supercross Championship, which will kick off January 6, 2024.

Sadly We Lost An Original

Dave Duarte  1941 – 2023

Hi-Point West

Back in the day Hi-Point West was grand central station for west coast motorcycle racers. They came for sponsorship, product deals or just some friendly advice from general manager Dave Duarte. Dave always had a smile, a pat on the back or an introduction he would make for a rider. Before Alpine Stars they were called HI-Point boots and everybody wore them. Dave had trouble keeping them in stock.  Red Dot tires, Hi-Point clothing  was the gear of choice for many riders.  Dave knew everyone, Hannah, Schultz, Kenny Roberts, Ricky Graham, Brad Lackey, Magoo, Danny Turner, Marty Smith, McKenna, Coupe, Dick Burlson, Carl Cranke and all the Penton clan. Not bad for a kid that grew up on a fruit farm in Loomis, CA. He loved to go to all the industry trade shows and share stories with everyone. Motocross, Supercross, ISDE, Dirt Track, Dave loved them all. He was a fixture at the ISDT for many years. He rode as a support rider for Team USA.

So the farm boy discovers motorcycle racing and is hooked…it’s an old story shared by many. This is the sixties and off-road riding is exploding. Dave is enjoying his new found passion and winning races but life gets in the way. Marriage, five kids, divorce and a stint in the merchant marines adds perspective. Dave was one of the founding members of the Dirt Digger North M/C in Northern CA. He went to work in the motorcycle industry selling accessories and somewhere along the line he met John Penton. Penton West or Hi-Point as it evolved into became Dave’s new home as general manager at the Rancho Cordova, CA location. His energy, winning smile, ideas and passion for the sport made a great impact on the early days of off-road riding and contributed to the sport’s rapid growth.

He will be missed. RIP Dave

Memories

Bruce Young

“With a heavy heart I would like to say "Goodbye" to my dear friend, our friendship started over 55 years ago when I joined the Dirt Digger North Motorcycle Club in 1969.

Dave was an original charter member and I was amazed at his racing abilities.  A few years later Dave was the manager of Hi Point West in Sacramento, California he hired me to assist in running the business while he was away on his many international trips and many runs to the home office of Penton Motorcycles/ Hi-Point.  It was great times traveling with him to many dealers shows, supercross's as well as many other fun racing events. I had a wonderful time over the 9 years I worked at Hi Point, traveling to these events, he knew everybody, and everyone knew him.  We met with many famous riders who wore Hi Point boots and used our other products.  Bob Hannah, Kenny Roberts, Marty Smith, and Broc Glover where just a few we worked with for many years.  Along with lots of local riders as well and the ISDT team riders as well, Carl Cranke, Jack Penton, Tom Penton just to name a few.  I would be remiss if I did not mention that Dave liked to party and party, we did.  What fun and great times with wonderful memories to last a lifetime.

Now he is with his Lord, and I hope resting easy.  The last 12 years where very challenging to him.

What I am going to miss the most is his voice over the phone, about 25 years ago I moved from California to Idaho, and we talked over the phone, sometimes two or, three times a month.  He will be very much missed!!!!”

John Volk

“We lost a great human yesterday. Dave was a great influence on my life as a kid giving me an opportunity to work at High Point Racing in the late 70’s. One of many who helped me be the person I am today. You will be missed. God speed my friend!!!!”

Eric McKenna

“The recent passing of Dave Duarte brought back a few memories.  One that I have that will always stand out, is how while Dave was at Hi-Point Racing he took care of his riders.  I was one of those riders in the mid 1980's when I went to France to race for another company, French of course and would be required to wear the French company's gear.  Dave okayed that while I was there since I was riding for Hi-Point West.

When I got there and used the new equipment, I found I could tolerate almost everything even though it was inferior equipment to the Hi-Point Products I had been using for several years.  However, The French boots made by that company were so inferior I felt I would be better off riding in my tennis shoes!  It was as if my feet would wrap around the foot peg like a chicken with those boots.  I was panicked and called back to see if I could get a pair of Hi-Point boots sent to me while in another country.  Dave did not hesitate and made sure I got a new pair of boots within a week!  He knew I would be susceptible to injury if he did not make that happen.  I Never forgot, Thank You Dave!”

Larry Hartnett

“Dave helped a lot of racers, top professional and amateurs as well…what I remember most are the great Christmas parties we had at Hi-Point…pitching quarters, telling stories…good times.”

Dave Coupe

"Dave was such a great person. He was the first to teach me about Sponsorships and building relationships in the industry. Dave and Hi-Point were the first people to help me with my racing career. He was always fun to talk to whenever I would run into him at events and of course, there was always stories to share! He taught me a lot about being appreciative of your sponsors and not just looking for free products and handouts. I will miss you Dave."
