Hangtown..."Girly Mud"
Sunday, May 19, 2019 at 5:36PM Tomorrow's races at Hangtown will be muddy but will they be really muddy? In the words of our resident moto man #33 " it will be girly muddy" the real mud race was 1991. He should know he was there. When all the factory stars sat under their giant umbrellas hoping the race would be cancelled the Dirt Diggers asked #33 if he could ride the track. Despite the flowing river through the middle of the track Eric successfully blasted through the mud and water and all thoughts of cancellation were put to rest. What followed was one of the most epic Hangtown races of all time.
If memory serves me well the Old Timers race mentioned in this video was won by local riders Terry Sage with Larry Hartnett a close second. The old guys had hundreds of laps on the Prairie City track and knew how to get around the water proving experience counts.

I remember riding my CR 500 like it was a Jet Ski. The one regret I have was not keeping the rear sprocket from my CR 500, as it had No Teeth left on it when I pulled off the track. The last couple of laps I thought my clutch was slipping, but upon inspection found there were no teeth left on the rear sprocket. Only Bumps where the teeth were supposed to be! The chain was spinning over the sprocket but creating just enough friction to propel the bike forward to reach the finish line.
I sure wish I had kept that sprocket and mounted it on the wall as a memento! Good times!

Can't imagine riding today's track let alone the 91 track on a CR 500. A beast of a machine but fun to ride.
I was there that day. I recall a very sparse crowd in the rain blowing sideways at times
"GIRLY MUD"...!!! typical 33 quote ..lol , would've been nice if ole dave despain mentioned my man Eric McKenna by name as the rider who tested the track for the factory riders that didn't want to get dirty that day.. yeah dude you shoulda kept that sprocket !! :)
